Do you have Pesky Profiles in Citrix or Terminal Servers?

I think we have all had it at some point, Pesky Profiles (What I mean in detail is If you are having profile unload problems if you experience slow logoff with Saving Settings for most of the time while logging off, roaming profiles that do not reconcile, or the registry size limit is reached.)

Basically the normal roaming or static profile pain of most Microsoft Terminal Services, Citrix, or large environments and service / support desks.

WHY DO PROFILES NOT UNLOAD or BREAK?

Many system and service processes do work on behalf of users (simple get around for accessing resources).

When the work is done the system or service process is responsible for releasing handles it has to the user profile hive.

If this is not done by the service as the user logs off the profile cannot be unloaded. This problem is usually in code can be caused by improper coding with in either in Microsoft software (Yes even Microsoft don’t code correctly or have issues) or 3rd party software (e.g. printer drivers, virus scanner service, etc).  With the information provided by the system there is no way to find out what software needs to be corrected to allow profiles to unload.

This problem can be caused for a variety of reasons.  While software developers are typically very careful about releasing handles, developing software that works on behalf of a logged on user is complicated.  It is difficult for software developer to have full control over how the registry is accessed.

Service developers might want to see KB article 199190 for more information. While it is possible to identify the service (see KB article 221833), it is sometimes difficult to track this down the specific problem code.

Even when you do identify the problem code there maybe times when the developer of this code is not able to make the necessary changes.

There might be an a slightly easier answer, if you haven’t been told about in a while, let me tell everyone again.

Microsoft UPHClean

If you are in question about installing Microsoft UPHClean on all of your Terminal Services Servers, this may help to ease your worries.

I have installed Microsoft UPHClean on thousands or servers and Terminal Services Servers since 2003, with mainly positive effects.
Try and always use the latest version of Microsoft UPHClean and I would suggest that you check in with Microsoft.com now and again
since they do (in frequently update this application / service)  At the time of the writing version 1.6d

Microsoft also appreciates feedback at uphclean@microsoft.com

What does Micrsoft UPHclean do.

Microsoft UPHClean takes care of the problems with the Handles regardless of the reason why.
Microsoft UPHClean is a service that once and for all gets rid of problems with user profile not unloading.
